Who are the Harlem Wizards that will be playing a local team of teachers and community representatives in the slamtastic “Hoops Tricks & Alley Oops” basketball show on Friday, March 10 at the A.L. Hutson Center?
The Harlem Wizards have been wowing audiences worldwide with their basketball wizardry for more than 50 years. From the time the Wizards step onto the court to themed music it is like a broadway show on a basketball court with the players delivering a choreographed trick and slam routine. The game features tricks, dunks, humor, and audience interaction. An awe-inspiring, two-hour basketball show (inclusive of autograph session) will be led by the Swoop Unit Wizard team featuring 6 talented players with electric personalities and their own professional master of ceremonies.
Meet the Wizards:
Dwayne “Swoop” Simpson #000 is a former Harlem Globetrotter showman in 06-07. He played in the 1997 New England Conference on the North East Regional Championship team. A Harlem Wizard since 2007, Swoop stands 6’7″ and went to school at Bethel and East Central Universities. As the leader of this Wizards team, Swoop enjoys being a role model to kids, bringing smiles to ther faces and bringing families together. “We all gotta come back into the community and show kids there’s another way and the cool thing is not to shoot people, not to stab people, not to be thugs, not to be gangsters, but to be successful, to be educated.”
James “The Roadrunner” Tyndal III #4 is fast enough to dribble through New York City traffic! At only 5’9″, Road Runner’s bio includes the 2008 and 2009 Division ll Basketball Conference and was All-Division during his junior and senior years at Buffalo State University – where he averaged 13 pts and 5 assists his senior season. He’s been a Wizard since 2009.
John “BIG J” Smith #31 played in 25 countries in 6 years. Last year he played in Western Australia State Basketball League. Big J won the 2004 Player of the Week for the City University of New York (CUNY) Championship Athletic Conference for College of Staten Island. At 6’11” he has been a Wizard since 2011.
Roscoe “Sarge” Johnson #30 – whose 360 backboard shattering dunk in a Wizards game was shown on ESPN’s dunks of the week online and has had over a hundred thousand views. He was the Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown runner-up, played with the Globetrotters, stands 6’5” and has been a Wizard since 2013. He attended Allegany College of Maryland.
Gerald “”SKY-WALKER” Warrick III #7 was first team All Conference and All-American and played professionally in Europe. He attended Point Park University, stands 6’4″ and has been a Wizard since 2014.
Justin “HIGH-RISE” Mitchell #20 is the newest and youngest Wizard at 25. He stands 6’5” and hails from Buffalo State College where he earned All-State University of New York Athletic Conference Player of the Week in 2011,2012, and 2013 and MVP in 2011.
